Epic Space Adventure

Freejacks is an Open RPG (ORPG) created by Spiro Harvey using the Aeon 6 system..

Freejacks, or jacks, are freelancers, free agents, and typically jacks-of-all-trades. They travel the spaceways looking for work where they can get it, usually doing whatever is necessary to make a credit.

It's often said "free" represents the lifestyle, not the employment status.

Jacks are commonly jacks-of-all-trades out of necessity. Some start as bounty hunters, scavs, or cargo haulers, but will probably do a bit of everything when a job asks of it.

The Freejacks RPG is an open game that is released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license. This basically means you are free to do with it as you wish for non-commercial purposes, as long as you return the love by sharing any modified version you may make back to the public under the same license.

Ideally, though, any changes/additions you make or propose will be done here on this wiki.

But you can play the game free. You can make copies of the game content for you and your friends (as long as you're not profiting from it).

If you're shy about changing the content directly, then leave comments and suggestions in the appropriate discussion page. Or send me feedback via email.

What's this game about?

I just got asked the big three questions in regard to a roleplaying game, and it reminded me that I've been asked them several times before. So it's best to put up the purpose of this game, and my philosophy on RPGs, right here to clear the air. Those that disagree can move on right at the outset before I waste any more of your time. Refer to the Reddit thread discussing this, which I will use to pad this out and hopefully better address all the questions.

  1. What is this game about?
  2. What do the characters do?
  3. What do the players do?

The short answer is that this game is about roleplaying in a futuristic setting. Do whatever you darn well please.

The rest is up to your imagination. Too often I see people expecting a game to be pigeonholed. I'm afraid RPGs just don't work like that. Too many people treat RPGs as hard and fast rules and complain bitterly when they "can't break out". Of course you can. It's called House Rules. Just make stuff up. Throw what you don't like out. That's the whole point. Roleplaying is the art of making stuff up.

A roleplaying game shouldn't spoonfeed you. It's up to you what you make of your game, not me.

Freejacks can be a game of political intrigue, or it can be a game where you fly around as pirates killing whoever you please (until you get caught by authorities or bigger pirates).

Seriously I can't stress this enough. Do whatever you want. That's the point of a roleplaying game.

If you don't like the Freejacks setting, but you like the Aeon 6 rules system, then make up your own setting. Or vice versa. Or pick each apart and modify them to your heart's content. It's ok. Don't feel bad. That's the purpose. You could do the same for any published system too.

Roleplaying is about your enjoyment. I can't (and won't) tell you how to suck eggs.

Wanted Contributions

There are many things that will help flesh out the universe of Freejacks, but among the most important are the planets, the sectors, important factions, and xenos. Feel free to invent some and to post them on here. But please remember that plagiarism will not be tolerated. It's great to be inspired by movies and books, but don't rip from them outright.
