Scavs, or scavengers, salvage anything they can from wrecks or abandoned ships, space stations, or asteroids. Anything that can be sold for a profit, or can be converted to a profit making item with minimal cost or resources is ripe for the taking.
Some scavs are picky and will take bots and bot parts for sale to botrunners or bot techs; engine parts for mechanics and salvage yards; med supplies for remote docs, hospitals, or smugglers; food commonly for remote planets, but are easily sold anywhere; and computer gear for techs and hackers.
Usually most other stuff is ignored, expect by the most desperate. "Salvaged" personal items are usually kept or sold off at pawn shops. Money for this sort of thing is too low to warrant making a habit of it.
Scavving is technically illegal in Confederate space, but scavs will only be arrested if they are either explicitly reported, if they're caught by coincidence such as a random cargo or breath check, or if they happen to be doing a bit of pirating on the side (lovingly referred to in the trade as pre-salvaging).
There are so many derelicts and junkers around the universe that in same cases the scavs are actually cleaning messes up.
